1st Grade Weather Tour at UMMA

Mrs. Brower's and Ms. Maciag's 1st Grade classes went to the University of Michigan's Museum of Art on Tuesday November 19, 2014. While at the UMMA students toured the museum through the lens of weather. Weather is a 1st Grade Science Unit.

Students were engaged in Mr. Ed's iPad display of weather that included a song "What's The Weather Today."

Possible iPad Grant

I want to thank everyone who voted for Carpenter Elementary for the Bank of Ann Arbor JumpstArts contest. We look forward to receiving $3000 for the Visual and Performing Arts programs.

I see the money used for purchasing mini iPads to share between the Art room and the Library. I think that it would be a great addition to our students knowledge as well as give them new creative outlets.

I am posting this blog and pictures via my son's iPad. I am using Blogsy to post carpenterartroom.blogspot.com via Blogger and the first 2 photos were directly downloaded from his iPad. The other 2 photos are from Instagram.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago- Thank you UMS!

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago

Last year Ms. Machida (retired Music Teacher) and I earned the DTE School of the Year for Arts Integration. In honor of us receiving this award we were given free tickets to a UMS performance. The performance our 3rd and 4th Graders saw was The Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. It was amazing. The images that are below are drawing the students did after the performance. The drawing mannequins were put in different dance poses. The background was inspired by Marc Chagall's American Windows which was used for inspiration for the performance.

American Windows were created to celebrate the country as a place of cultural and religious freedom, dealing with the arts: music, painting, literature, theater and dance.

Students from Fourth, Third and Second Grade have artwork at St. Joseph's Reichert Center in Ann Arbor. Fifth Grade: September- October

My Fifth Graders have Art once a week for 61 minutes. I try to combine their Science and Social Studies as best I can.

Architectural Pop-ups

My Fifth Graders first project was inspired by a book my brother gave me this summer while he and his family were visiting us from Germany. The book is Paris: A 3D Keepsake Cityscape by Sarah McMenemy. They spent a lot of time making the buildings on one paper and the background on another. Below you will find some of their amazing work.

Day of the Dead Skulls

Fifth Grade students made Day of the Dead skulls. Students had to be aware of the spacing of the eyes, nose and mouth. They decorated their skulls to reflects their own artistic interests.

Fourth Grade: September- October

Fourth Graders have Art for a or a 1 hour session for more traditional Art and a 38 minute session for a Humanities Art class that integrates their Social Studies and Science with Art. This year the Common Core expectations of Math and Literature will also be integrated into their Art class.

Hundertwasser Buildings

The first project was inspired by Hundertwasser who was an Eco-Architect from Austria who designed houses and buildings in a way that they did not impact the environment. For instance he would replace the ground space he used for his buildings by adding it to the rooftop in the form of parks and gardens.

Koi Fish

The students in 4th Grade will be studying about The Watery Earth. Students created their own Japanese Koi paintings. We discussed how non-native species can threaten the environment as well as native species.
