The Kings and Queens of 5th Grade

Fifth Grade

The Fifth Grade students created self-portraits based on the work of Georges Rouault. Students learned that Rouault painted portraits of King and Queens for a living and that his portrayal of clients had to be done well. Since each class has to do a self-portrait it seemed like a perfect pairing. Students created self-portraits based on his style. They had to create a personal design through use of patterns and symbols. Students also needed to choose colors and create texture in the clothing with watercolor paint. For inspiration students look at work by Rouault, playing cards and a postage stamp.

The Carpenter Project with the Rising Stars

On Thursday March 29, 2012 the Rising Star Program from the AAPS collaborated with Carpenter students. This one day mentoring event had High School students paired up with children in different grades.

The Art Room became a place of collaboration as the Kindergardeners and their mentors create a "Rainbow Garden" based on the book Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert. The combination of art for Youth Art and Music Month as well as March is Reading Month was awesome.
